Mumbai, July 5: Two women sustained serious injuries after a large tree suddenly collapsed on them outside a chemist shop on MG Road in Mumbai's Goregaon. The shocking incident, captured on CCTV, has once again raised concerns over tree maintenance in the city amid the monsoon.
The CCTV footage shows the tree crashing onto the roadside, trapping the two women underneath. Following the incident, residents questioned whether the tree had been pruned properly before the monsoon. Several locals alleged that improper pruning may have weakened the tree, leading to its collapse. They criticised the BMC's Garden Department and its contractor over the maintenance of trees in the area and demanded a formal inquiry to fix responsibility. The incident comes hours after another tree fall in Mumbai claimed the life of a 63-year-old man in Kurla. Yunus Hakimuddin Sheikh, who had recently purchased a shop, was preparing it for its opening when a tree collapsed on him. CCTV footage of that incident also surfaced online.
The latest accidents have renewed concerns over tree safety in Mumbai during the monsoon season. Last week, 11-year-old Vihaan Srivastava was killed and four other children were injured after a tree fell on their school bus. The tree, estimated to be 60 to 70 years old, had reportedly been inspected and declared healthy in May after routine pruning.
The back-to-back incidents have sparked calls for stricter inspections and greater accountability to prevent similar tragedies.
