Navi Mumbai Hospital Under Probe After Newborn Dies During Delivery; Family Alleges Last-Minute Procedure Change
A probe has been ordered after a newborn died during delivery at NMMC's First Referral Unit in Vashi, Navi Mumbai. The parents alleged that doctors secured consent for a C-section due to the baby's large head size but shifted to an unassisted normal delivery. Health authorities confirmed records are under review and a postmortem will establish the cause of death.
Autorickshaw driver Milind Das returned from Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation’s (NMMC) First Referral Unit in Vashi without his newborn, demanding answers after his baby allegedly died during delivery. Das and his 23-year-old wife, Laxmi, were expecting their first child when she was admitted to the civic hospital on October 1.
The incident has triggered grief and outrage among the family members, who claim that medical staff shifted clinical decisions without adequate justification. Following the death, relatives gathered at the facility seeking transparency regarding the medical protocols observed inside the labour room. Procedure Changed?
The family alleges that doctors initially advised a Caesarean section, stating the baby’s head was too large, Mid Day reported. Despite the family giving consent for the C-section, the medical team allegedly altered the plan and attempted a normal delivery, during which the baby died.
The alleged change in the delivery plan has now become the central question for the grieving family, which is desperately seeking answers from the hospital administration.
Probe Ordered
NMMC Medical Officer Dr Rajesh Mhatre said, “We will take information about the incident, and appropriate action will be taken.”
The family’s allegations remain independently unverified, and the newborn’s body has been sent for a postmortem to establish the exact cause of death while authorities review the records and circumstances surrounding the delivery.
Milind Das, autorickshaw driver: ‘My wife was carrying our first child. The doctor told us that the baby’s head was big and that a C-section would be needed. We permitted it. But later, they tried for a normal delivery. Now my child is dead, and my wife is also not well. We want to know why this happened’
Vijaya Das, Laxmi’s mother: ‘We are poor people, and we had come to the hospital trusting the doctors. They first told us about a C-section, and we agreed. Now we have lost the baby, and my daughter is also not well. We want justice. Who will be responsible for what has happened?’
