Police have launched a murder investigation after the body of a 22-year-old newlywed woman was recovered from a water tank outside her residence in New Nehru Nagar, under the Rau police station limits, on Thursday afternoon. Authorities have detained the victim's husband and his family members for questioning.

The deceased, identified as Vandana Kushwaha, had married Upendra Patel—a local clothes vendor—less than a month ago on August 11 in a love marriage. According to local authorities, the victim suffered severe sharp-weapon injuries to her neck and abdomen. Bloodstains found inside the premises suggest she was attacked indoors before her body was dumped into the water tank to conceal the crime. The incident came to light after neighbors reported hearing screams from inside the house on Thursday afternoon. Shortly afterward, neighbors spotted bloodstains on Upendra’s clothing as he left the premises. When there was no further activity from the residence for an extended period, residents notified the police.

Upon arriving at the scene, law enforcement officers located and recovered Vandana's body from the external water tank. Forensics experts inspected the site, and the body was dispatched for an autopsy to determine the precise time and cause of death.

Prior to the marriage, Vandana’s family had filed a missing-person report at the Chandan Nagar police station. However, because she was an adult, her statement was recorded, and she opted to reside with Upendra. Family members informed officials that the couple had experienced frequent disputes following the marriage, primarily over Upendra's reported addiction issues. Police are currently questioning Upendra, his brother, and a sister-in-law. Investigators are cross-referencing their statements, analyzing mobile location data, and examining multiple angles, including domestic disputes and potential honor killing, to establish the sequence of events.
