Senior IPS officer Nupur Prasad, who supervised the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) investigation into actor Sushant Singh Rajput’s death, has been selected for the President’s Medal for Distinguished Service on the occasion of Independence Day 2026. The 2007-batch AGMUT-cadre officer is among police personnel recognised this year for distinguished and meritorious service.
IPS Officer Nupur Prasad - Recognition for Distinguished Service
Prasad’s selection is part of the annual police, fire, Home Guard and Civil Defence and correctional services medal announcements made around Independence Day. Government data shows that 1,057 personnel have been selected for gallantry and service medals this year, including 92 President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 664 Medals for Meritorious Service. Role in Sushant Singh Rajput Investigation
Prasad headed the CBI investigation into the death of actor Sushant Singh Rajput during her tenure with the agency. The case had attracted widespread public and media attention following Rajput’s death in Mumbai in June 2020.
The CBI took over the investigation after the case was transferred to the agency in 2020. Prasad subsequently supervised the probe into the circumstances surrounding the actor’s death. Return to Delhi Police
After completing her stint with the CBI, Prasad returned to the Delhi Police. She is currently serving as Joint Commissioner of Police in the Economic Offences Wing (EOW), where she oversees investigations involving financial and economic offences, according to reports.
The officer has held several important assignments during her career in the Delhi Police. She was also the first Deputy Commissioner of Police of Shahdara district, where she was involved in setting up the new district's policing framework and handling crime-prevention initiatives.
Wider Recognition for Police Personnel
The Independence Day honours recognise police and other service personnel for contributions to areas including investigation, crime prevention, law and order, administration and public safety.
For the Delhi Police, 17 personnel were selected for service medals this year, including two President’s Medals for Distinguished Service and 15 Medals for Meritorious Service. Prasad’s selection places her among the officers recognised for distinguished service as India marks its 80th Independence Day.

The award adds another recognition to Prasad’s career, which has included assignments in both the Delhi Police and the CBI. Her latest posting in the Economic Offences Wing follows her work on the Rajput investigation and other policing responsibilities.
