Jhota was shot dead on Tuesday, October 13, after confronting Kumar over the alleged sale of drugs to an elderly man at his medical store in Mansa, Punjab. The confrontation was being recorded during a Facebook Live session hosted by the activist.

According to media reports, an argument broke out between Jhota and the shop owner, who was allegedly seen carrying a pistol during the confrontation. Kumar allegedly opened fire, killing Jhota. Several of his companions were also injured in the incident.

Police are also examining a previous dispute between Jhota and Kumar dating back to 2023. According to preliminary findings reported by police, personal enmity stemming from the earlier confrontation is being investigated as a possible motive for the killing.

An associate allegedly helped Kumar flee after the shooting and was arrested earlier, according to media reports. The investigation is continuing to establish the circumstances surrounding the murder and the roles of those involved.

Jhota's killing sparked protests in Mansa, with supporters demanding action against those responsible. His family also refused to cremate his body amid the protests, while additional police personnel were deployed in the area to maintain law and order.

The incident drew criticism from opposition parties, which questioned the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government's handling of law and order and the safety of people campaigning against drugs.
