According to officials, the incident took place during a pipeline pressure test and was not caused by any structural failure of the newly constructed road. No injuries were reported.
Videos from the spot show water gushing several metres into the air before rapidly inundating the road and nearby areas. The incident drew attention online as Maharashtra continued to witness heavy monsoon rainfall across several districts. The pipeline burst coincided with intense rainfall across Pune, Mumbai and neighbouring regions. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a red alert for Pune, Mumbai City, Mumbai Suburban, Raigad, Thane and Palghar, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall. An orange alert remains in effect for Ratnagiri and Satara.
Civic authorities have urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel as flooding and waterlogging continue to affect several areas. While Mumbai Metro and BEST bus services remained operational, suburban train services experienced delays due to water accumulation on tracks.
Officials have advised people living in low-lying and flood-prone areas to stay alert, monitor weather updates and follow official advisories until the heavy rainfall subsides.
