Over 100 tourists from Mumbai Central, Chembur and Ghatkopar were rescued from Khopoli's popular Zenith Waterfall on Saturday, July 4, after heavy rainfall caused water levels to rise rapidly, leaving them stranded at two different locations. A joint operation by the Khopoli Fire Brigade, local police and villagers safely evacuated everyone without any casualties.

According to officials, the tourists had entered the waterfall area early in the morning when weather conditions were clear. However, heavy rain later caused the waterfall to overflow, cutting off their return route and triggering a large-scale rescue operation. Mumbai Tree Collapse: Large Tree Falls in Bandra Kurla Complex, Road Blocked (See Pic).

More Than 100 Rescued From Khopoli’s Zenith Waterfall

Tourists Trapped as Water Levels Rose

Officials said the group entered the waterfall area at around 7 am, when there was no rainfall. Heavy showers began around 10 am, causing water levels to rise rapidly. One group became stranded nearly 500 metres inside the waterfall area, while another was trapped about one kilometre from the entrance.

With the route submerged by fast-flowing water, the tourists were unable to return safely. A rescue operation involving the Khopoli Fire Brigade, local police and residents of Vihari-Thakurwadi began around noon. After nearly three hours of rescue efforts in challenging conditions, all stranded tourists were brought to safety by around 3 pm. Khopoli Fire Officer Mohan More said: "The tourists had gone inside early in the morning when the weather was normal. Once heavy rain started, the water level rose quickly and they were unable to return. Our team, with the support of local villagers, carried out the rescue operation and safely evacuated everyone."

Several local volunteers joined rescue teams and entered the swollen stream to help evacuate the stranded tourists. Officials acknowledged the efforts of Narayan Nirgude, Bhagwan Nirgude, Akshay Jadhav, Kumar Dhumne, Raj Dhumne, Police Patil Vasant Polekar, Narayan Bhagat, Sachin Bhagat and Pawan Nirgude for assisting in the operation.

Following the incident, authorities appealed to tourists to avoid visiting waterfalls and other vulnerable locations during the monsoon. Officials warned that water levels can rise suddenly due to upstream rainfall, even if weather conditions appear safe when visitors first enter such areas.
