Jaipur, September 4: The Rajasthan Human Rights Commission (HRC) on Wednesday issued an order asking the state government and the Centre to "prohibit" the practice of live-in relationships. The order states that it is imperative upon the government to prevent the practice. The HRC directive comes months after the body's chief, Justice Prakash Tatia, had sought a report from the Director General of Police, Railways and Police Commissioner of Jaipur and Jodhpur on the prevalence of live-in relationships in the state. Bianca Maieli and Saima, Lesbian India-Pakistan Couple's Stunning Wedding Photos Go Viral!

"It is imperative to stop the practice of live-in relationships, and it is the responsibility of the state and Central government to prohibit it," the order of Rajasthan HRC was quoted as saying by news agency ANI.

Update by ANI:

Justice Tatia has been a strong critic of the practice of live-in relationship, and had earlier likened it to "social terrorism". While speaking to a national daily in August 2017, State HRC chief had claimed that at most places where such couple exists, the society remains in "terror", fearing for the safety of their children.

Although he had then clarified saying that he is not calling for a ban on the practice, the retired judge had put forth a strong case to regulate live-in relationships.

"What is the status of their children? We have to bear in mind that society has yet to accept live-in relationships... such children are not accepted in schools or in society," he had told the Indian Expressadding that the practice is more detrimental to the rights of women as compared to triple talaq.

In March this year, the State HRC had taken suggestions from common people, social workers, social organisations, state government and the Rajasthan police on how they view the practice of live-in relationships and whether such couple pose any major threat to the society.
