‘They Punched Me in Chest’: Nimisha Thakuria’s Last Call Before Death, Ashiq Ali Claims She ‘Hanged’ Herself

The postmortem of Nimisha Thakuria, the 22-year-old Gauhati University student who died in a case now under police investigation, was conducted at Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH) in Guwahati, and her grieving father has demanded strict government action against whoever is responsible. Nimisha was found in a critical condition at a homestay on the outskirts of the city and was declared dead on arrival at GMCH, after which police detained her 26-year-old companion, Ashiq Ali, and began examining the circumstances that led to her death, with CID and forensic teams also collecting evidence from the room where the two had been staying.
Father Demands Justice
Speaking after the postmortem, Nimisha's father, Deepjyoti Thakuria, said, "I want justice. I demand that the government take stern action against the culprit. What my child faced, the culprit should face a similar situation."

Call to Mother at 2 AM
According to her father, Nimisha called her mother around 2 am on Saturday and said, "Ma, they have beaten me. They punched me in the chest and assaulted me. I am injured." They then approached the Azara police station, where an officer tried to trace her phone location. About half an hour later, police informed the family that a girl had been found at Garal Primary Health Centre and asked them to verify whether it was Nimisha. She was later referred to GMCH, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Family Says She Had Not Mentioned a Homestay
Nimisha's father said she left home around 5 pm on Friday and told her mother she might spend the night with friends at the Gauhati University hostel. She repeated the same plan around 10 pm. The family said she had never mentioned staying at a homestay with Ashiq Ali. "She took Rs 2,000 just two days back, saying she would go out to eat with her friends and stay overnight at a friend's hostel," he said.
Police Examine Companion's Account
Police said Nimisha and Ashiq had been staying at a homestay in the Dharapur-Garal area. According to police, Ashiq claimed that Nimisha had hanged herself.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) Balin Deuri said investigators would verify that version. "Whether it is true or a lie, would come out during the investigation," he said. The post-mortem report is awaited.
Homestay Under Scanner
Police said the two had visited the homestay five times this month and were allowed to stay without proper verification. The homestay had also not collected mandatory identification documents from them. Its owner has been questioned, and action will be initiated under the law.
A staff member, Bipul Bailung, said the two were staying in room number 10 and had ordered food around 9.30 pm. He claimed staff heard shouts for help and crying in a male voice around 2.30-3 am. "Three of us went to their room and found the girl lying on the floor, with the boy holding her in his hands and crying," Bailung said.
Locals Block Road, Demand Probe
Following the news of her death, local residents blocked a road leading towards the nearby airport and demanded a thorough investigation. "We demand a proper investigation and justice so that no one involved in the incident is allowed to escape accountability. Those responsible should be identified and brought to justice," a protester said.
Some protesters also alleged a link to what they described as 'love jihad'. Police have said the investigation will establish the facts of the case. Nimisha's last rites were performed on Saturday evening after her body was handed over to the family.
