Unakoti, January 11: Tension erupted between two communities in Tripura’s Unakoti district after a dispute over subscription collection for a local community fair escalated into communal violence, leaving at least five to six people injured and several houses gutted, police said.

In response to the flare-up, the Tripura government imposed prohibitory orders, deployed additional security forces, and suspended mobile internet services in the Kumarghat Sub-Division for 48 hours as a precautionary step. At least eight people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

According to police sources, the violence began on Saturday when a timber-laden vehicle was stopped at Saidarpar village under Fatikroy police station limits, where a group allegedly demanded a subscription for a local fair. Communal Clashes Erupt in Tripura

Tension further escalated in the Shimultala area after a family from one community reportedly refused to contribute to the subscription. A mob allegedly gathered in retaliation, setting fire to multiple properties, including a timber shop, and vandalising a place of worship. Central armed police forces have conducted flag marches in sensitive areas to restore confidence among residents. Police officials said the situation is currently under control but remains sensitive.

To maintain law and order, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Kumarghat imposed Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, restricting gatherings and movement in affected areas. Authorities have appealed to residents to maintain peace and refrain from spreading rumours.
