The Punjab Police has launched an internal inquiry and transferred Tanda Station House Officer (SHO) Gurinderjit Singh Nagra following reports that he was named by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in connection with an international extortion racket. The allegations suggest an attempt to extort USD 400,000 from an Indian-origin family living in the United States by threatening to frame their relatives in India for murder.

Who Is Gurinderjit Singh Nagra?

Gurinderjit Singh Nagra is an inspector in the Punjab Police who was serving as the Station House Officer (SHO) of the Tanda Police Station in Hoshiarpur district. Details of the Extortion Allegations

The investigation, part of the U.S. Department of Justice’s "Operation Hard Ball", alleges that the extortion scheme began in early 2026. US authorities claim that an alleged member of the Bhagwanpuria syndicate provided the details of a California-based family to Inspector Nagra. According to federal documents, Nagra allegedly contacted the family and threatened to implicate them and their relatives in Punjab in the murder of a local shopkeeper, which had occurred in January 2026. Prosecutors state that Nagra continued to pressure the victims for money, at one point complaining that "they didn't pay us the whole amount what was agreed upon".

Administrative Action and Investigation

In response to the reports, the Punjab Police took immediate administrative steps. "For now, this matter has come to light based on the video and information circulating on social media. So far, no official confirmation or clear information has been received from the Government of India or the Punjab Government in this regard," the Hoshiarpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) stated. As a precautionary measure, Nagra has been removed from his role at the Tanda Police Station and transferred to the Police Lines. The Jalandhar Range Deputy Inspector General (DIG) has assigned the investigation to the Superintendent of Police (Investigation), Jalandhar Rural. Connection to 'Operation Hard Ball'

The case against Nagra is one component of a broader, multinational crackdown by U.S. law enforcement targeting India-based organized crime groups involved in extortion, narcotics trafficking, and targeted killings. U.S. officials have indicated that they intend to aggressively pursue the extradition of those implicated in these schemes. The operation has already resulted in indictments against 37 individuals, including high-profile figures such as Satinderjeet Singh, alias Goldy Brar, and Lawrence Bishnoi.
