Why India’s Monsoon Is Arriving Early in 2026 and Why the Skies Above You Are Already Changing

The Indian skies are quietly undergoing a significant atmospheric shift, and scientists say it is happening earlier than usual this year. Upper-level winds high above southern India have begun to change direction in ways that signal an advancing southwest monsoon - a development that could bring much-needed relief to millions across the subcontinent sooner than expected.

Upper-level easterlies associated with the southwest monsoon have already spread over Karnataka, Kerala, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Andhra Pradesh, the southern Bay of Bengal, and the southern Arabian Sea. Meteorologists say this development will help the monsoon advance over the next two weeks and allow weather systems to track further north across the country.

The Giant Highway in the Sky

High above the clouds, roughly 13 to 14 kilometres up, powerful winds blow from east to west during India's monsoon season. Scientists call this the Tropical Easterly Jet, or TEJ. Think of it as a giant atmospheric highway running overhead. When the TEJ is active, it creates upper-level divergence - a process where air at high altitude spreads outward in all directions, acting like a vacuum that pulls surface air upward, feeds convection, and ultimately drives rainfall across the subcontinent. A stronger TEJ generally means better monsoon rains. It also steers low-pressure systems and cyclonic depressions forming over the Bay of Bengal northward and inland, spreading rains across a larger part of the country. IMD New Monsoon Forecast System: How AI Is Transforming Weather Predictions for Over 3,000 Sub-Districts Across India.

The Other Wind That Matters

A second critical wind is also at play. In the months before the monsoon, a powerful stream of winds known as the subtropical westerly jet blows from west to east high above northern India, acting like a heavy atmospheric blanket that suppresses rainfall. As summer temperatures rise sharply, this jet shifts northward beyond the Himalayas, and its suppressing effect disappears. That shift has now occurred, freeing the atmosphere over India to allow the monsoon to push northward without resistance. El Nino 2026: These States and Cities in India Face Highest Risk As Historic El Nino Prepares To Hit.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast the monsoon's onset over Kerala around May 26, several days ahead of the long-term average of June 1 - raising hopes for an early and robust rainy season across India in 2026.
