Why Mumbai Police Imposed Restrictions From July 23 to August 6

Mumbai Police have imposed prohibitory orders across the city from July 23 to August 6, restricting unlawful assemblies of five or more persons, processions and the use of loudspeakers in processions, citing apprehensions of a breach of peace, disturbance to public tranquillity, and danger to life and property.

What Activities Are Prohibited?

Under the order, the following activities have been prohibited across the city:

• Assembly of five or more persons
• Processions
• Use of loudspeakers, amplifying instruments, musical bands, and bursting of crackers during such processions

The restrictions have been imposed as a preventive measure to maintain public order and prevent any disturbance to peace during the enforcement period.

Who Is Exempt?

The order exempts marriage ceremonies and matrimonial functions, funeral assemblies, and processions to crematoriums or burial grounds, statutory meetings of companies, clubs, co-operative societies and other associations, social gatherings held for routine business, gatherings in cinema halls, theatres and places of public entertainment, assemblies in courts, and government or local body offices for official work.

Assemblies and processions that receive prior permission from the concerned zonal Deputy Commissioners of Police and their supervisory officers will also be allowed.

Legal Action for Violations

The order states that any investigation or legal proceedings initiated during the validity of the restrictions will continue even after the order expires. Penalties or punishment for violations committed during the enforcement period may also be imposed after the restrictions are lifted.

Mumbai Police have directed officials to publicise the order by displaying notices at prominent public places, courts and government offices, making announcements through loudspeakers or megaphones, and disseminating the information through available media channels.

Delhi Also Under Tight Security

The announcement comes as Delhi Police have also intensified security arrangements ahead of the Monsoon Session of Parliament and the proposed 'Chalo Sansad' march by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP).

Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) are in force in the New Delhi district. According to the advisory, protest marches, demonstrations and assemblies of five or more persons are prohibited, except at the designated protest site at Jantar Mantar with prior permission.

Police have warned that violations may invite prosecution under applicable provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
