CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke was detained by Delhi Police on Monday, July 20, during the party's 'Sansad Chalo' march, CJP spokesperson Saurav Das said, as the protest near Parliament turned tense with security forces using tear gas and mild force to disperse demonstrators.
The protest, organised to demand examination reforms, saw thousands of supporters gather at Jantar Mantar before attempting to march towards Parliament on the opening day of the Monsoon Session. Security was tightened across the area, with police setting up multiple barricades around the Parliament complex.
CJP Alleges Crackdown On Protesters
Saurav Das alleged that police were "brutally cracking down and beating up peaceful protesters" and appealed to Members of Parliament to support the students participating in the demonstration.
"Police brutally cracking down and beating up peaceful protesters, request MPs to stand in support of students on streets," CJP's Saurav Das said, according to PTI.
Protest Turns Tense Near Parliament
Security forces used tear gas and mild force after protesters allegedly attempted to cross barricades in the high-security zone around Parliament. Officials said a few Parliament gates were briefly closed as the crowd gathered near the complex.
According to PTI, protesters tried to push through multiple security barricades around 11.25 am, leading to a scuffle in which some protesters and police personnel sustained minor injuries. Around 10-15 protesters were detained, sources said.
Tensions escalated near the Constitution Club and the Reserve Bank of India area, close to Parliament, where security personnel dispersed protesters. At least seven CJP protesters were detained near the RBI, according to party representatives.
Delhi Police Deny Allegations
Delhi Police officials said mild force was used to disperse protesters near the RBI area. The police also denied allegations of a crackdown.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sachin Sharma said Delhi Police had not used force against the protesters.
Protest Focused On Examination Reforms
The CJP organised the 'Sansad Chalo' march to press for examination reforms. The demonstration coincided with the opening day of the Monsoon Session, leading to heightened security arrangements in central Delhi as protesters attempted to reach Parliament.
Authorities and protest organisers have presented differing accounts of the events, while the detentions and police response remain at the centre of the unfolding developments.
