Chennai, December 17: Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. The DMK had also opposed the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) in the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha. The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) lawmaker Kanimozhi on Tuesday also protested against the amended citizenship law and raised slogans against the Central and state government. People gathered in huge numbers and chanted, “We oppose, we oppose, we oppose Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA)." Clad in a black saree, Kanimozhi stood on the dais to show her disapproval with the newly enacted law. Since the Bill received presidential assent, there have been protests against it in several parts of the country. Meanwhile, the cerfew was lifted by Assam government in Guwahati and broadband services resumed on Tuesday. The Assam Police said on Tuesday said that it has detained more than 3,000 people and arrested 190 persons for indulging in violent protests last week in the state over the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). "136 cases have been registered so far and 190 protesters have been arrested. These were not normal democratic protesters but people who indulged in violence. Some conspirators have also been arrested, including some major leaders from various organisations,” Assam Director General of Police (DGP) Bhaskar Jyoti Mahanta was quoted by ANI.
