Mamata Banerjee Had No Leg Fracture in 2021 Nandigram Campaign, Claims Suvendu Adhikari (Video)
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday revived the controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram, claiming that a medical report found “no evidence of fracture or dislocation”.
West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari on Saturday revived the controversy surrounding Mamata Banerjee’s leg injury during the 2021 Assembly election campaign in Nandigram, claiming that a medical report found “no evidence of fracture or dislocation”. Adhikari said the state government would initiate a fresh inquiry into the matter after the Model Code of Conduct is lifted.
Suvendu Adhikari Cites Medical Report
Addressing a press conference at the state secretariat Nabanna, Adhikari claimed that he had access to a medical report from the Bangur Institute of Neurosciences dated March 11, 2021. According to Adhikari, the report stated that there was no evidence of fracture or dislocation in Banerjee’s leg. He displayed the document while making the allegation and said further details would be released after the conclusion of the ongoing bypoll process. ‘No Evidence of Fracture or Dislocation’
Adhikari alleged that Banerjee had misrepresented the severity of her injury during the 2021 election campaign and described the episode as “false propaganda”. He said the CID would investigate the matter once the Model Code of Conduct is lifted after October 9.
What Happened to Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram in 2021?
Banerjee was injured on March 10, 2021, while campaigning in the Reyapara-Birulia area of Nandigram ahead of the West Bengal Assembly elections. At the time, Banerjee said she was surrounded by a large crowd while campaigning and that her left leg was injured after being pushed against the door of her vehicle. She was subsequently taken to Kolkata and admitted to SSKM Hospital. ‘This Time BJP Will Go’: Mamata Banerjee Predicts Political Change Before 2029 (Video).
Reports from the period said she was discharged on March 12 with her left foot in a cast and continued campaigning in a wheelchair. Contemporary accounts also reported injuries involving her left ankle and foot, as well as bruising and pain in other parts of her body.
Medical Report at Centre of Fresh Dispute
The latest controversy centres on the interpretation of the medical records from that period. Adhikari is specifically citing a Bangur Institute report that he says recorded “no evidence of fracture or dislocation”. However, reports on Banerjee’s treatment at the time also described bone and ligament injuries to her left ankle and foot. Therefore, Adhikari’s current claim concerns the absence of a fracture or dislocation in the cited report; it does not by itself establish that Banerjee suffered no injury at all.
Inquiry to Follow Nandigram Bypoll
Adhikari said he would provide more details once the Model Code of Conduct ends. The announcement comes ahead of the Nandigram Assembly bypoll scheduled for October 6, with counting due on October 9. The timing has brought the five-year-old controversy back into the political discourse surrounding Nandigram, where Adhikari and Banerjee had faced each other in the closely contested 2021 Assembly election.
The proposed inquiry is expected to examine the medical records and circumstances surrounding the injury. Until the investigation establishes its findings, Adhikari’s allegations remain claims about the 2021 episode.
