Hyderabad, July 29: Senior Congress leader Mukesh Goud died on Friday after battling prolonged illness. The 60-year-old breathed his last in Hyderabad, in presence of close family members. The funeral ceremony is expected to be held tomorrow, with scores of leaders cutting across party lines expected to pay their last tributes.

Goud, a three-time MLA and Minister in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh government, was diagnosed with cancer five years ago. Goud was last seen in public during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, when he arrived on a stretched to cast his vote.

Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao condoled the demise the Congress veteran, calling his death a huge loss for the politics of Andhra and Telangana.

Notably, Goud began his political career as an NSUI worker in the early 1980s. He was elected as a legislator from the Maharajganj assembly constituency in 1989. From the same seat, he was re-elected in 2004. In 2009, he won the assembly polls from Goshamahal. In 2014, however, he lost the seat to BJP leader Raja Singh.
