New Delhi, August 6: Senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Tuesday broke his silence on the revocation of special status to Jammu & Kashmir by the central government. The "unilateral move", the Gandhi scion said, would further create resentment in the Valley and pose implication for the national security.

"National integration isn’t furthered by unilaterally tearing apart J&K, imprisoning elected representatives and violating our Constitution. This nation is made by its people, not plots of land," Gandhi said in a post on social media. Jammu & Kashmir Loses Special Status, But Other States Also Bar 'Non-Residents' From Buying Land or Property: Check Full List

"This abuse of executive power has grave implications for our national security," he further added in his tweet.

"Kashmir’s mainstream political leaders have been jailed at secret locations. This is unconstitutional and undemocratic. It’s also short sighted and foolish because it will allow terrorists to fill the leadership vacuum created by GOI. The imprisoned leaders must be released," he added.

Notably, the former Congress president is present in the Lok Sabha where a debate is currently underway on the Centre's modification to Article 370, which in turn has rendered Article 35(A) -- which defined the "permanent residents" of Kashmir -- null and void.

Gandhi has, however, not participated in the debate underway in the House. From his party, Anandpur Sahib MP Manish Tewari has led the charge.

Tewari, who had issued the notice for debate on the issue, said the revocation of Article 370 without the recommendation of state assembly would set a wrong precedent. "Won't you repeal Article 371 -- which guarantees special status to northeastern states -- in the future," he asked.
