The main contest in Telangana is between the prominent Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) and its primary opposition party Indian National Congress (INC). Sirpur: In 2014, (Bahujan Samaj Party) BSP Koneru Konappa had defeated TRS' Kaveti Sammaiah by a margin of 8,800 votes. He had won from the same constituency in 2004 elections in then undivided Andhra Pradesh. This year Konappa is in the fray against Congress candidate Dr Palvai Harish Babu. In 2014 assembly elections, other than Sirpur where BSP won, in Chennur, Bellampalli, Mancherial, Asifabad and Khanapur, TRS has witnessed a clear majority. In the 2014 elections, TRS emerged victorious with 63 Assembly seats and 11 out of 17 Lok Sabha seats.
The K Chandrashekar Rao-led Telangana Assembly was dissolved prematurely in September on the recommendation of the ruling TRS government, more than eight months ahead of the expiry of its term, leading to snap elections in the state.
