The date for Eid celebration in India and other parts of the world is determined by the sighting of crescent moon on 'Chand Raat'. Eid or Eid al-Fitr will be celebrated in India’s West Bengal, Odisha and Assam on June 5 on the first day of the new month of Shawwal. The Eid celebrations in these states will begin if the moon is sighted today. The official date of Eid is announced by the Hilal Committees of these states after the Maghrib prayers. Generally, Muslims in West Bengal and Assam follow the decision of Kolkata Hilal Committee. Meanwhile, the new moon was sighted in many Gulf countries including Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Kuwait on Monday. The moon sighting will also mark the end of the Islamic holy month of fasting – Ramadan. The crescent or a new moon will be visible only for a few minutes on the 29th day of the holy month of Ramadan-ul Kareem. The fast will be extended for a day if the moon could not be seen. With the sighting of the moon, the celebrations of Eid will begin.

As per Gregorian calendar. every year, the Eid falls 11 days earlier each successive year. As part of Eid celebrations, Muslims offer special prayers in open areas, community centres, and at mosques. Social gatherings are organised and traditional sweet dishes are distributed. Some even have a belief that the festival originated after Prophet Muhammad migrated from Mecca to Medina.
