Bug bites can drive you nuts, especially if you are hot or trying to sleep. Although scratching the affected area might offer immediate relief, it will only cause more inflammation, which makes it itch even more. But worse, if you scratch the bite until it bleeds, opening the skin with your dirty fingernails can put you at risk for an infection. If you get a bug bite, here are some healthy ways to relieve that annoying itch.

1. Honey

If you do not mind a bit of adhesiveness, honey can do the trick of soothing that itch. Just a drop of honey can be enough as anything more than that can create a sticky mess.

2. Tea Tree Oil

This natural oil can not only alleviate the itch but also reduce the pain and inflammation. Plus, it is antibacterial which means that it can help avoid any infection when you scratch the area of the wound with your nails. Here's How to Beat Eczema Itch.

3. Lavender Oil

Rubbing a few drops of lavender oil in the affected area can help dull the sensation and keep you from scratching the area time and again. However, remember that lavender oil can be a bit too acidic, so ensure that you dilute it with water first.

4. Coconut Oil

Not only coconut oil soothes the skin and reduces the inflammation, but it also creates a protective layer on the skin which prevents the affected area from coming in contact with dirt and dust. Plus, it is antibacterial and can help in quick healing of the bite.

4. Holy Basil or Tulsi

Basil isn't just limited to your kitchen. When applied on the affected area, the camphor in basil can give you a "cool" feeling similar to the menthol in toothpaste. 6. Tea Bags

Placing a tea bag on the bite can draw the fluid out of the bite and reduce the swelling and itching. Simply brew a cup of tea and let it cool for a few minutes. Then apply the tea bag on the inflammed area to reduce the frequency of scratching.

7. Ice Cube

A single ice cube can be enough to constrict the blood vessels and restrict the release of histamine, to reduce the itching. Simply take a block of ice in a cloth and apply on the bump for instant relief. Itchy Breasts and Nipples? 6 Reasons Your Lovely Lady Lumps Are Itchy As Hell

8. Apple Cider Vinegar

Because of its low acidic levels, apple cider vinegar can be a great way to block the itching. Just add two to three cups of apple cider vinegar in your tub and get relief from all the bug bites.

9. Milk and Water

Mix equal parts of milk and water, dip a thin cloth and apply on your skin. The protein in milk can be super soothing to the itchy bite.

Keep in mind, however, that if a bug bite turns into an itchy rash all over your body, it can be a sign of a more generalised response by your immune system, which could require medical attention.
