A viral video from Botswana has captured the moment a massive male hippo chased a tourist boat through shallow water after a group encountered the animal during a wildlife outing. The boat’s captain initially slowed down after spotting the hippo, but soon warned passengers that they needed to move away. The boat accelerated as the animal began pursuing it.

The encounter left passengers visibly shaken, although the chase eventually ended without reported injuries, the New York Post reported. Oznur Bell, the tourist who filmed the incident, described it as “one of the most terrifying moments I’ve ever experienced.” Anant Ambani Urges Colombia To Stop ‘Cocaine Hippos’ Cull Linked to Pablo Escobar, Offers Lifelong Home at Vantara.

Tourists Spot Territorial Hippo in Botswana

The tour boat was travelling along a waterway when the group spotted a lone male hippo in the distance. The captain slowed the boat to avoid disturbing the animal, which appeared to be occupying the waterway.

“After watching his behavior for a moment, he calmly said, ‘Hold on—we need to speed up now before he decides to come after us,’” said Oznur Bell, the tourist who captured the moment on camera. “The moment we accelerated, we looked back and realized the hippo was chasing us.” The video shows the hippo moving rapidly through the shallow water behind the boat as the tourists moved away. Hippo Attack in Karnataka: 27-Year-Old Veterinarian Killed by Hippopotamus at Tyavarekoppa Lion and Tiger Safari in Shivamogga.

Hippo Pursues The Boat

The encounter quickly changed from a wildlife sighting into an effort to put distance between the boat and the animal. The boat driver appeared relatively calm during the incident, while passengers were more visibly concerned as the hippo continued moving toward them.

The animal eventually abandoned the pursuit, bringing the encounter to an end without any reported injuries. “For a few moments, every single person in the boat was genuinely worried,” the videographer said.

Why Hippos Can Be Dangerous

Although hippos are herbivores and primarily feed on plants, they can be highly territorial, particularly around water.

The University of Pretoria says hippopotami are unpredictable and dangerous and reports that they kill about 500 people in Africa each year. Recent research from the university also found potentially dangerous bacteria in hippo mouths, highlighting the risks associated with bite injuries.

The San Diego Zoo Wildlife Alliance information cited in reports says common hippos can grow up to 16.5 feet long and 5.2 feet tall at the shoulder. Adult males can weigh between 3,500 and nearly 10,000 pounds. That size, combined with their powerful jaws and territorial behaviour, makes close encounters particularly hazardous.

Hippos And Boats

Hippos spend much of their time in or around water and can react aggressively when they perceive a boat or person as a threat to their territory.

They can also move surprisingly quickly through shallow water. Rather than swimming in the conventional sense, hippos can propel themselves by pushing off the bottom of a river or waterway. The Botswana encounter appeared to demonstrate that ability, with the animal repeatedly surfacing and moving forward as it followed the boat.

A Close Call For Tourists

The tourists had set out to see African wildlife but found themselves much closer to one of the continent’s most dangerous large mammals than expected. The incident also illustrates the importance of maintaining a safe distance from wild animals, even when they appear calm or stationary.

The hippo ultimately stopped pursuing the boat, and no injuries were reported. For the passengers, however, the unexpected chase turned an ordinary wildlife sighting into an encounter they were unlikely to forget. The tourist who filmed the dramatic encounter described it as “one of the most terrifying moments I’ve ever experienced.”
