Like many things these days, this too started on Twitter. Earlier this week, a user named Deja tweeted a screenshot of an Instagram account, and a messaged about a Swedish social media influencer who runs it, Emma Hallberg. The Instagram model with 176,000 followers, has curly brown hair and dark skin with beautiful features. Her selfies and makeup look have captivated her fans who are gushing over her photos would comment with heart-eye emojis. To her followers, she has been throwing some major beauty goals. But Deja found out that despite many people’s assumption, Emma is not black. Her popular Instagram account has become infamous following major backlash from her followers that includes black women. #ThisIsNotConsent: Women Flood Twitter With Underwear Photos After It Was Used as Evidence in Rape Trial in Ireland.
Deja told The Cut, “Finding out Emma was white was so shocking due to the fact that this girl has done everything to look the part of a mixed black girl.” She was further quoted in the same report as saying, “The sad part is she really fooled everyone into believing she was a mixed girl.” Jacaranda Trees Turn Streets of Sydney Into a Purple Haze! As more of Emma’s fans realised that she was not black, debates erupted across social media on how the teen was intentionally or unintentionally presenting herself.

An older photo of Emma showed her with lighter with lighter skin. But she was quick to defend the comparison. She was quoted in Buzzfeed News as saying, “ I do not see myself as anything else than white. I get a deep tan naturally from the sun. The only difference is that I didn't post as many pictures that summer compared to this summer, because I didn't have as many followers then as I do now.”
Another user shared a screenshot of a conversation which appears to have come from Emma’s account.

Apart from the hatred comments, there are other fans too who are coming to Hallberg’s defence. A user tweeted, “Think it’s absolutely disgusting that emma hallberg has had to justify wearing dark foundation and turned her comments off cause she’s getting threatening messages. Anyone pretending they’re ‘offended’ is just puuuuure jealous cause she’s stunning.”
