A confident India women's hockey team will be vying to win the gold medal after a long wait of 36 years when they take on Japan in the final at the 18th Asian Games today. The win will guarantee them a direct entry in Tokyo Olympics 2020.Â
India won the gold medal in 1982, the year women's hockey was first included in the Asian Games programme. They reached the final for the second time in 1998 when they lost 1-2 to South Korea. They bagged bronze medals in 2006 and 2014.Â
India's Achanta Sharath Kamal and Manika lost their respective singles matches in the table tennis competition at 18th Asian Games on Friday. Kamal lost 7-11, 11-9, 10-12, 16-14, 9-11 to Chuang Chihyuan of Taiwan in the men's singles pre-quarterfinals. Manika also lost in the pre-quarterfinals. India's best bet in the women's singles category was no match for Wang Manyu of China, going down 2-11, 8-11, 8-11, 11-6, 4-11 in a rather lopsided contest. India's table tennis campaign ended with two bronze medals in men's team and mixed doubles events.
In Boxing, India's Vikas Krishan has to settle for the Bronze medal in Men's 75kg event, after he was declared medically unfit for his semifinal match.
In Squash, Indian Women Team has defeated Malaysia 2-0 in their Semi-finals match. The Indian team comprised of Joshana Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal, Sunayna Kuruvilla, Tanvi Khanna.
The Indian team will be facing the winner of Hong Kong vs Japan Semi-final match.
