Sri Lanka vs England Highlights And Cricket Score 27th Match - ODI Commentary

End of Over : 50.0 SL: 232/9

233 is the target now for England! They will surely fancy themselves to chase this down. Sri Lanka will need their bowlers to be at their absolute best if they are to defend this. Will they be able to do so? Join us in sometime to find out.

Mark Wood says they started off brilliantly as they got two early wickets in the start and then they finished off well in the end as well. Wood also credits the spinners for the way they squeezed runs in the middle. Mark feels he is in the best form of his life and is bowling well. On the pitch, Wood informs the ball was gripping a bit and there was also a little spin on offer. He feels though Mathews played well they did well to restrict Sri Lanka.

The England bowling was spot on right from the word go! Their new ball bowlers did a decent job. Moeen Ali applied the brakes in the middle. Rashid bowled his best spell of the World Cup so far. Wood and Archer finished with a three-fer, Woakes had one to his name and Rashid finished with a couple. However, Wood was probably the pick of their bowlers. He is down for a chat with Alison Mitchell.

So, Sri Lanka have crawled their way to 233! A very dull display by the bat with them and they surely do not have enough on the board. They were put in to bat and their innings started off in the worst possible manner as they lost both their openers within the first 3 overs. Fernando though started a counter-attack and his partnership with Mendis got things back on track. However, once the former fell, the run rate just kept going down. It was slow going between Mathews and Mendis and the latter perished when he looked to attack. No Lankan batsmen got going. Even Mathews, who was their top scorer, failed to time the ball, however, it is due to him, Sri Lanka are where they are.

Chris Woakes to Dimuth Karunaratne. Once again Karunaratne does not find the middle! This is fuller and on the pads, it is angling away. DK looks to work it on the leg side but due to the away angle, the ball goes off a soft leading edge to cover.

0.2 0

Chris Woakes to Dimuth Karunaratne. Slightly fuller and outside off, Karunaratne looks to hit it through the off side but ends up playing outside the line, it goes off the inner half towards the bowler.

0.1 0

Chris Woakes to Dimuth Karunaratne. An excellent beginning by Woakes! He lands it on a length and around off, it jags back in sharply. Karunaratne is surprised by the movement. He fails to put bat on ball. It hits him high on the pads and goes to the keeper.

Done and dusted with the National Anthems! The English players make their way out to the middle. They are followed by the Sri Lankan openers, Kusal Perera and Dimuth Karunaratne. Chris Woakes has the first new ball in hand. Two slips in place. However, we have a slight delay as we have a sightscreen issue. It has been solved though and Woakes comes running in to bowl the first ball.

The players are out in the middle for their respective national anthems. First up it will be Sri Lanka's followed by England's. We are not far away from the first ball being bowled in this game.

England Playing XI - James Vince, Jonny Bairstow, Joe Root, Eoin Morgan (C), Jos Buttler (WK), Ben Stokes, Moeen Ali, Chris Woakes, Adil Rashid, Jofra Archer, Mark Wood.

Sri Lanka Playing XI - Dimuth Karunaratne (C), Kusal Perera (WK), Avishka Fernando (IN for Lahiru Thirimanne), Kusal Mendis, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Jeevan Mendis (IN for Milinda Siriwardana), Dhananjaya de Silva, Isuru Udana, Lasith Malinga, Nuwan Pradeep.

Eoin Morgan says they would have wanted to bat too, it looks a good wicket and they would have wanted to make use of it. Informs they have gone with the same line-up like the last game and he expects there to be some turn later on. States their first priority is to get into the semi finals and if they do that, they will assess which player needs a rest in the games ahead. Ends by saying, it is a big moment for Moeen Ali as it is his 100th cap and he deserves a place in the side.

Sri Lanka skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne says that it is a batting track and hence they are batting first as they do not want any scoreboard pressure. On the break he says it was a good chance to discuss the strategy and focus. Reckons they need to do something special here to beat England. On the form of his sides middle order. Karunaratne says he is not worried about it and is confident that the it will come good. On the team changes, Karunaratne informs there are two changes in his side as Milinda Siriwardana and Lahiru Thirimanne are replaced by Jeevan Mendis and Avishka Fernando

TOSS - The skippers and the match referee are out in readiness. England skipper, Morgan spins the coin. Sri Lanka skipper, Karunaratne calls Tails and it lands in his favour. SRI LANKA OPT TO BAT.

PITCH REPORT - Nasser Hussain and Wasim Akram are the pitch analyst for the day. Hussain says bowling from the Football stand the straight boundaries are 74m whereas from the other end it is 78m. He says the sun is out and it looks like a good day. Wasim Akram from the other end agrees with Nasser and says it is a lovely day and tells us it is a day which is called as a batting day in England. On the pitch, Akram informs that it is a belter for batting and informs us that the average score here is 290 batting first.

Today's clash is between the host and one of the title contenders England and 1996 World Champions Sri Lanka. A must-win game for the visitors as a loss here will make it very difficult for them to enter into the semi-finals. They are second favourites against an English side who are on a roll. They have won their last two games quite convincingly and will look to make 3 in 3 here today. Anything less than an England win will surely be an upset.

End of Over : 47.0 ENG: 212/10

So, that is the end of the game! This is probably the upset of the tournament, at least till now though. However, will this victory see Sri Lanka go strength to strength and how much will this affect England? Well, we will know in the coming future. On the 22nd though, we have 4 different teams batting it out. Yes, it is a double header, the first game sees India taking on Afghanistan in Southampton, that game will begin at 1030 local (0930 GMT). The other game is a cracking one as West Indies lock horns against New Zealand in Manchester at 0130 local (1230 GMT). Till then, take care and goodbye!

Victorious Sri Lanka skipper, Dimuth Karunaratne says they lost the toss and sometimes they were under pressure whereas sometimes they were dominating. Tells when batting they knew it was a tough wicket and were looking to get 250-270 but lost wickets. Credits Mathews for his innings and ended up with a good total. Tells it was a team effort as Malinga got wickets along with Dhananjaya. Says Root's wicket was the turning point of the game and knew how good he is. Tells he luckily they got his wicket at a critical juncture.

England skipper, Eoin Morgan says they were good with the ball but the lack of substantial partnership did the damage. Says losing this game was more frustrating than shocking. They knew it was going to be tough to win all games in the tournament but they wanted to do that. Says they just need to dust themselves off and come stronger in the next game. Reckons it is a long tournament. Says Australia is a tough opponent and taking them on at the home of cricket will be a good challenge.

For his brilliant bowling display, LASITH MALINGA IS NAMED THE MAN OF THE MATCH - Malinga says that when Stokes was dropped they were worried as they knew how good a player he is. Says they kept bowling stock balls even when couple of those went for boundaries towards the end they did not worry. The plan was to maintain good line and length and mix it up with the variations without giving away any loose deliveries. Tells they are a confident side and are looking to take the momentum from this going forward.

Earlier in the day, the Lankans were put into bat and were bundled out for 232. Archer and Wood were the stars for England. However, that proved to be enough in the end, Ben Stokes' unbeaten 82 went in vain and Malinga emerged as the hero for today with a four-fer.

Who was the star with the ball for Sri Lanka? Well, when you look at the figures, you have to tell, it is Lasith Malinga who ended with a four-fer and four big wickets of Bairstow, Root, Buttler and Vince. However, credit has to be given to all the Lankan bowlers here. Everybody was extremely disciplined and never gave anything away. Udana and Dhananajaya were also crucial as they took five amongst them. Nuwan Pradeep also had a wicket to his name and probably the one which mattered the most, the last one.

Defending 232, you need early wickets and Sri Lanka did manage to send both the openers back in the hut quite early on. Root and Morgan then steadied the ship with a fifty run stand. The latter fell but then Stokes joined Root and the two added yet another 50-plus run stand. England were on top then but Sri Lanka did not let them run away with the game. They kept bowling tight and never let England score freely and that tight bowling finally paid off. They got Root and Buttler in quick succession. Moeen Ali and Archer threw it away when they needed to bat sensibly. Stokes was the lone man fighting and at one stage, it seemed like, he would win the game for them but Wood could not negotiate the one ball he had to of Nuwan Pradeep.

WHAT A GAME! WHAT A GAME THIS WAS! Wow! How many of you'll thought that Sri Lanka would win this game after posting 232? Surely, surely not many! I never felt they had a chance. However, they have risen against all odds and have come out on top in a game they had to win.

46.6 W

Mark wood is the last man in for England. Sri Lanka on the cusp of a victory and England have a 'Herculean' task with Big Ben still there.

43.4 W

Isuru Udana to Jofra Archer. OUT! Archer holes out! Once again, this shot can be questioned with Stokes at the other end. He walks back disappointed. The pressure surely got to him. It is the slower one outside off, Archer looks to clear long on but does not get the power behind the shot. It goes straight to Perera there who takes it above his head. Oh dear me! Jofra Archer was very good with the ball but sure he didn't expect to bat today, did he? He will have to bat and do a job here. England have their backs against the wall. Sri Lanka are close to pulling off a miracle.

38.3 W

Dhananjaya de Silva to Moeen Ali. OUT! In the air... taken! Moeen Ali has thrown it away! Why, just why did he have to play that shot? Especially after he hit one biggie on the last ball. Lasith Malinga to Jonny Bairstow. OUT! Bairstow has to take the long walk back! A golden duck for him. A tough, tough call there by the umpire. Could have easily gone either way. Bairstow knows that and he walks back very angry. Smashes his bat onto the ground. Malinga bowls a fuller delivery on the leg pole. Jonnny looks to flick but misses to get hit on the pad. An appeal and the umpire raises his finger after giving it a thought. Bairstow reviews after a chat with Vince. Replays roll in and they show that the ball is just clipping the leg pole. The on-field call stays and Sri Lanka have got the start they would have wanted defending a low total.

Action straightaway! Bairstow has been given out LBW! He has reviewed. Looks out though if there is no inside edge. Ultra Edge shows no bat involved. Hawk Eye shows it to be umpire's call.
