The incident occurred during the morning session on Day 1 after Jaiswal had reached 45 off 53 balls. Having struck Fernando for three boundaries earlier in the 17th over, Jaiswal was eventually dismissed when an inside edge ricocheted onto his stumps.
Following the wicket, Fernando offered an animated send-off as the batter began walking towards the dressing room. Jaiswal abruptly turned back to confront the bowler, resulting in a tense face-to-face exchange before Sri Lanka captain Dhananjaya de Silva and the on-field umpires stepped in to separate the two players.
Addressing the press at the end of the day's play, India's batting coach Sitanshu Kotak acknowledged that while the exchange occurred in the heat of the moment, the batter should have avoided moving so close to the bowler in retaliation. Sri Lanka fast bowling coach Ryan van Niekerk similarly described the altercation as an overflow of emotion typical of competitive Test cricket, deferring any disciplinary review to the ICC match referee.
Jaiswal's public comments mark a firm stance from the Indian camp, signalling an aggressive posture in response to opposition sledging as the series progresses.
