A reported Cloudflare outage triggered widespread disruption across the internet on Monday, affecting numerous popular websites and online services. According to a report by Daily Mail, problems began at approximately 8.35 am ET, leading to increased error rates and latency for users attempting to access platforms such as X, Zoom, Google, and Microsoft. Cloudflare, however, denied reports of the outage at their end, stating that Zayo, a network provider, was experiencing an outage on some of its network routes.
Cloudflare Outage: Physical Damage to Internet Infrastructure
Cloudflare identified the root cause of the incident as a fibre cut located in Eastern North America, reported Daily Mail. This physical damage to a major internet cable necessitated the rerouting of traffic through alternative paths to mitigate the disruption. The company, which provides critical web security, content delivery, and routing services globally, confirmed that it was actively investigating the incident. While engineers worked to alleviate network congestion and packet drops, the company noted that customers connecting through North America or accessing services in Europe might intermittently encounter increased latencies and timeouts. Despite these challenges, most affected services showed clear signs of recovery later in the day as traffic engineering efforts took effect.
Cloudflare Denies Outage
Reacting to reports, Cloudflare asserted that there was no outage and their services are operating normally. "The only issue we are aware of is that Zayo is experiencing an outage. That may cause some sites using Zayo exclusively to be unreachable, whether they use Cloudflare or not. We are seeing evidence that Zayo’s network is recovering and expect errors to be short-lived," it said.
