IIT Bombay alumnus and artificial intelligence entrepreneur Rishabh Agrawal has officially addressed recent media claims suggesting he turned down a million dollar offer from Meta after a brief tenure at the company. The former researcher clarified that his decision to leave was driven by a desire for independence rather than a rejection of compensation.

As per a report by The Times of India, Agrawal revealed that the actual financial package offered by the technology giant was significantly higher than the figures circulating in recent discussions. The entrepreneur emphasised that his departure after five months was a strategic move to focus on launching his own venture within the artificial intelligence sector. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg Admits ‘Mistakes’ in AI Workforce Restructuring, Rules Out Further Mass Layoffs for Remainder of Year.

Pursuing Innovation Over Corporate Roles

Agrawal announced his exit from Meta last year via a social media post, noting that leaving the Superintelligence TBD lab was a difficult choice. Having spent over 7.5 years across major industry players including Google Brain and DeepMind, he expressed that he felt a strong professional urge to embrace the risks associated with starting a new company.

He referenced the philosophy of Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, noting that in an environment changing at such a rapid pace, the most significant risk is avoiding risk altogether. His transition highlights a shifting landscape in the Indian technology ecosystem, where talent from premier institutions is increasingly prioritising independent entrepreneurship over established corporate stability.

Technical Expertise and Industry Background

The entrepreneur holds a distinguished academic record, having secured an All India Rank of 33 in the JEE. He completed his Bachelor of Technology in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay before earning a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. His research has consistently focused on deep reinforcement learning and large language model reasoning.

His career includes notable tenures at Google Brain and Google DeepMind, where he made significant contributions to the field of reinforcement learning. His work has been recognised with prestigious industry accolades, including the NeurIPS 2021 Best Paper Award. Beyond his industry roles, Agrawal continues to serve as an Adjunct Professor at McGill University, a position he has held since September 2024.
