Instagram introduced a redesigned wordmark on Thursday, marking the first update to its text-only logo in ten years. The change was announced by Instagram head Adam Mosseri across both Instagram and Threads, where he described the new design as sharper and cleaner while still nodding to the platform's original identity.

The refresh comes a decade after Instagram last touched its brand identity, when the company retired its brown camera icon with the rainbow stripe in favour of the colourful pink gradient logo that remains in use today.

What Has Changed

The new wordmark retains a script-inspired feel but moves toward a half-cursive, half-print style, replacing the fully cursive lettering that has topped the app for the past ten years. The redesign is part of a broader brand system update that also introduces new typefaces, including an updated Instagram Sans, a handwriting-style face called Instagram Pen, and a monospaced option named Instagram Mono. The signature gradient is being retained but will reportedly be used more sparingly across the platform's visual language. Instagram New Logo: Meta's Platform Unveils Refreshed Wordmark but Does It Have Same Charm?

Mosseri explained the reasoning behind the update in his post. "The wordmark at the top of the app hasn't changed in 10 years, so it was time for a refresh. Cleaner and more modern, with references to the original and the simplicity and craft that's always made it Instagram," he wrote.

Rollout And Reception

The new wordmark is rolling out globally, with the wider brand identity expected to continue unfolding through 2026 and beyond, according to reports.

Reaction online has been mixed. A number of users have pointed out that the stylised lowercase "r" in the new design makes the name resemble "Instagzam" or "Instagwam," sparking jokes across social media. Others have welcomed the fresher look, praising the updated font choice, while some critics have called the new mark harder to read than its predecessor.

Meta has not yet commented further on the redesign or confirmed whether additional visual changes, such as a new app icon, are in the pipeline.
