The update marks a shift in how shared subscriptions are managed, allowing users to log in independently while remaining part of the same household plan. What the Netflix Login New Rules Change
With the update, each profile owner can now use a separate email address while staying on a shared subscription. Previously, all profiles under one account relied on the primary account holder’s email address.

How Users Can Link Emails
Subscribers can add an email address through the “Profile Settings” section or by using a link sent in a notification email from Netflix.
A Netflix spokesperson told Ars Technica that the sign-in update is a permanent change that started rolling out on June 15, 2026. The company said the rollout applies broadly across shared subscriptions, excluding child profiles.
The rollout has received mixed reactions. Some users welcomed the ability to manage their own profiles independently, while others questioned why an additional email address is now required.
Privacy concerns have also been raised. Netflix’s privacy policy states that email addresses may be shared with marketing and advertising companies. Users who link an email may also receive promotional emails, though they can opt out of marketing communications.
Netflix also clarified that if a household member links an email address to a profile, the user will retain access to the profile and associated personal information.
Clarification on Authentication Reports
Reports suggesting Netflix would introduce mandatory multi-factor authentication for all subscribers from July 7 were dismissed. According to Ars Technica, the authentication requirement applies only to business partner accounts and does not affect regular consumer users.
The update follows Netflix’s password-sharing restrictions introduced in 2023, continuing the platform’s efforts to refine how shared accounts are managed and accessed.
