OpenAI Co-Founder Greg Brockman Takes Charge to Merge ChatGPT and Codex Into Single Platform: Report
OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman has taken formal control of the company's product strategy during Fidji Simo's medical leave. Brockman announced plans to merge ChatGPT, Codex, and the API into a single platform. The consolidation aligns with a directive from CEO Sam Altman to halt secondary projects and refocus on core artificial intelligence products.
OpenAI co-founder and president Greg Brockman has officially taken charge of the company’s product strategy, consolidating its primary offerings as the artificial intelligence pioneer refocuses on its core products. The transition, which cements an existing interim arrangement, comes while the Chief Executive of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) deployment, Fidji Simo, remains on medical leave.
According to an internal staff memorandum, Brockman plans to merge the company’s consumer-facing chatbot, ChatGPT, with its dedicated programming tool, Codex, into a single unified platform. The strategic shift follows directives from OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman to streamline the company's focus and prioritise its primary software ecosystem over experimental side projects. OpenAI Product Strategy Consolidation Plans
Under the newly structured leadership, OpenAI aims to integrate ChatGPT and Codex to establish a more cohesive user experience. In the staff memo, Brockman outlined that the consolidation is intended to help the company execute its goals with maximum focus toward an "agentic future," aiming to capture a larger share of both the consumer and enterprise markets.
A company spokesperson confirmed that while Simo remains on medical leave, she collaborated with Brockman to finalise these structural changes. The transition will bring ChatGPT, Codex, and OpenAI’s application programming interface (API) under the management of a single, core product development team, eliminating the previous division between separate engineering units.
Sam Altman Code Red and Strategic Refocus
The decision to merge these platforms follows a "code red" declaration issued by Sam Altman at the end of last year. Altman warned internal teams that the company needed to aggressively refocus on the core ChatGPT experience amid intensifying market competition from tech rivals.
As a result of this mandate, OpenAI has halted several secondary initiatives, described internally as "side quests." These suspended projects include the widely publicised video generation tool, Sora, as well as the specialized OpenAI for Science initiative. The company is now redirecting those engineering resources back toward expanding the capabilities of its primary text and code models.
Transition Toward Advanced Agentic AI Systems
The unification of the coding and conversational engines represents a technical step toward creating true AI agents. Industry analysts suggest that combining Codex's deep understanding of programming logic with the conversational fluidity of ChatGPT will allow OpenAI to deploy more autonomous systems capable of executing complex multi-step tasks. By streamlining its product pipeline, OpenAI is positioning itself to better serve its rapidly growing corporate client base. The consolidation is expected to roll out in phases over the coming months, creating a singular portal for developers, casual users, and enterprise clients alike.
