OpenAI Chief Executive Sam Altman has shared details of an unusual experiment involving the company's latest artificial intelligence model, GPT-5.5. Following its launch on 23 April, Altman asked the chatbot to plan its own debut party, resulting in a series of detailed and "intuitive" requests for the event's flow. The experiment highlights the increasing ability of large language models to mimic human social behaviours and preferences.
GPT-5.5 Party Planning Details
During a fireside chat at Stripe Sessions, Altman revealed that GPT-5.5 requested the event be held on 5 May. The model specified that speeches should be kept short and requested its creators give a toast, though it explicitly noted it did not wish to give one itself. Altman described the chatbot's suggestions as a "beautiful set of things" designed to manage the evening's atmosphere.
One of the more functional requests from the AI was the creation of a central location at the party to collect ideas for the future GPT-5.6 model. These ideas would then be fed directly back into the system. Altman confirmed that the company intends to follow through with the plan, despite admitting the request felt unusual.
Automated Guest Selection and Guest List
Attendance for the event was managed through an online registration form, with selection handled by Codex, OpenAI’s dedicated coding agent. Registration for the event reportedly filled up almost immediately. While Altman expressed plans to host larger events in the future, this initial celebration remains exclusive.
Altman also addressed his ongoing legal dispute with former co-founder Elon Musk on the social media platform X. Despite the high-stakes courtroom battle currently taking place in Oakland, Altman stated that Musk "could come if he wants to," adding that "the world needs more love".
Intelligence Versus Consciousness Debate
The experiment comes amid a wider scientific debate regarding whether AI can transition from intelligence to true consciousness. While GPT-5.5 demonstrates human-like planning abilities, a recent paper from Google DeepMind suggests that AI consciousness remains unlikely.
Alexander Lerchner, a senior staff scientist at DeepMind, argues that AI systems remain "mapmaker-dependent". This means they require a human agent to organise reality into meaningful states, suggesting that while AI can mimic human behaviour, it lacks the independent awareness and feeling required for consciousness.
