The 51.7-meter-tall, 420.5-tonne GSLV-F17 rocket lifted off from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre at 2:55 AM IST, precisely injecting the 2,367-kilogram spacecraft into its intended Sub-Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (Sub-GTO).

Landmark Payload Capacity for GSLV

The GSLV-F17 mission marks the 19th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle and the 107th launch from Sriharikota. Operating with an S139 solid core, four L40H liquid strap-ons, a GL40HT liquid second stage, and an indigenous CUS15 cryogenic upper stage, the vehicle achieved a major milestone by carrying the heaviest payload in the GSLV program's history. Speaking from the Mission Control Complex post-launch, ISRO Chairman V. Narayanan highlighted the vehicle's evolution, noting that payload capability has increased from 1,536 kg during the initial GSLV flight to 2,367 kg today through structural mass optimization and system performance upgrades.

A Persistent 'Eye in the Sky'

From its vantage point approximately 36,000 kilometers above the equator, EOS-05 will match Earth's rotation to maintain continuous coverage over the Indian subcontinent. The satellite will gradually reach its target orbit—with a perigee of 170 km, an apogee of 28,934 km, and an inclination of 19.28 degrees—using onboard thrusters. ISRO Deploys 2,367 kg EOS-05 Imaging Satellite into Orbit

Equipped with high-resolution optical, multi-spectral, and hyper-spectral sensors, EOS-05 expands India's Earth observation fleet, which stood at 21 operational satellites as of early 2026. While previous assets largely operate in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) or Sun-Synchronous Orbits (SSO), EOS-05 joins geostationary meteorological satellites like INSAT-3DS to provide near-real-time monitoring capabilities for:

  • Disaster Response: Rapid tracking of severe cloudbursts, cyclones, floods, and forest fires.

  • Strategic Surveillance: Continuous imagery support for border monitoring and maritime security.

  • Environmental & Resource Management: Real-time data collection for agricultural health, oceanography, and hydrology.

ISRO Bounces Back and Outlines Future Roadmap

The success of the GSLV-F17 flight provides a key operational boost for ISRO following the failure of the PSLV-C62 mission earlier in January 2026 due to a third-stage anomaly. It also builds on the momentum of the GSLV-F16 mission in July 2025, which successfully deployed the joint NASA-ISRO NISAR satellite into orbit.

Following Friday's achievement, Chairman Narayanan announced an ambitious schedule for the remainder of the financial year, including six additional launches featuring the NVS-03 navigation satellite and the first uncrewed flight of the Gaganyaan human spaceflight program.
