Why Apple's MacBook and iPad Prices Have Increased by Up to 42% Worldwide

Apple Inc. has implemented sharp price increases across its global hardware portfolio, raising the starting costs of various MacBook and iPad models by 20% to 42% compared to their initial launch figures. The adjustments, which are now live on Apple’s localized regional websites including India, represent a direct corporate response to the skyrocketing cost of semiconductor and memory components worldwide.
Steep Price Corrections Across Premium Hardware
The price adjustments have significantly impacted both entry-level and high-end consumer models. According to the revised price list on Apple India's portal, the MacBook Pro lineup powered by the M5 series chip has seen a base price bump of roughly 20%. Specifically, the 14-inch MacBook Pro configured with the M5 Pro chip is now retailing at Rs 2,99,900, marking a Rs 50,000 upward shift from its debut price of Rs 2,49,900. Concurrently, the iPad Air family experienced the steepest percentage hike. The basic 13-inch iPad Air model saw its pricing climb by 41.22%, adjusting to Rs 1,19,900 from its established launch benchmark of Rs 84,900.
The Underlying Cost Structure Shift
Market experts point to structural supply chain imbalances as the primary catalyst for the sudden repricing strategy. Neil Shah, co-founder and VP for Research at Counterpoint Research, noted that the price corrections hitting the MacBook Neo, MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, iPad Air, and iPad Pro Wi-Fi versions trace back to fundamental shifts in the electronics production landscape. "These adjustments follow the biggest change in the cost structure of the consumer and enterprise PC and tablet market, currently being shaped by rising semiconductor chip pricing from memory to processors," Shah stated.
AI Infrastructure Straining Consumer Supply
In an official statement addressing the matter, Apple acknowledged that the consumer electronics sector is contending with an unprecedented operational environment. The tech giant highlighted that the monumental expansion of artificial intelligence (AI) data centers globally has caused an unexpected, massive surge in heavy demand for storage and memory allocation, forcing component suppliers to prioritize enterprise AI clients. "We have never seen a component price increase this much, this quickly," Apple explained in its statement. The company added that while it had previously absorbed these backend overheads to insulate consumer retail rates, it has reached an operational threshold where passing a portion of the manufacturing costs to the consumer market became unavoidable.
Industry trackers such as TrendForce have validated this strain, reporting that dynamic random-access memory (RAM) costs surged nearly 98% in early 2026, with an additional 60% climb expected in the subsequent quarter. While Mac and iPad variants have borne the brunt of this supply pressure, Apple's core iPhone lineup has remained unaffected by the price modifications for the time being.
