The drive was viewed as a significant shift in the tech retail sector, which had historically remained non-unionised.

The path to unionisation within Apple has been fraught with tension. Around the same time as the Towson vote, a similar effort in Atlanta was withdrawn. The IAM Union expressed "outrage" over the decision to close the Maryland store, describing the move as a strategic attempt to dissolve the union's presence.
