Victim Identified as Bank of America Executive
Piacenti was a vice president at Bank of America and worked in its global corporate and investment banking division. Reuters reported that she was responsible for business selection and conflicts.
Bank of America expressed deep sorrow over her death, describing Piacenti as a valued colleague. Piacenti, who was from New Jersey, had been visiting the Times Square area when she was attacked. Police Identify Suspect
Police identified the suspected attacker as Pamela Cisneros, 49. Authorities said she was armed with two large knives when officers arrived at the scene. According to police, Cisneros had stabbed two people before officers confronted her. Officers attempted to stop her using Tasers, but she continued to advance while holding the knives. Police then opened fire, fatally wounding her.
Cisneros was taken to Bellevue Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Second Victim Remains Hospitalised
The second victim, a 68-year-old man, was also taken to Bellevue Hospital following the attack.
He was reported to be in stable condition, according to the Wall Street Journal.
Police said the two victims appeared to have been attacked without any apparent provocation. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch described the stabbings as random and unprovoked.
No Indication of Terrorism
Authorities have not indicated that the attack was terrorism-related. Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the stabbings and the subsequent officer-involved shooting. The NYPD’s Force Investigation Division is handling the investigation into the police shooting. Officials have also said the suspect had a history of mental health issues, although the investigation into her motive remains ongoing.
Police Response Under Investigation
The incident ended after officers shot Cisneros when attempts to subdue her with Tasers failed. As is standard in cases involving police use of deadly force, the officer-involved shooting is being investigated separately. Body-camera footage captured the confrontation, according to reports.
The attack has renewed attention on public safety in Times Square, a major tourist and commercial hub that attracts large crowds throughout the day. The investigation into the stabbing, the suspect’s motive and the sequence of events remains underway.
