A multi-week manhunt for a man accused of terrorising pedestrians and a female jogger in Philadelphia while wearing a Chucky-style Halloween mask ended late Tuesday night, August 25, with his arrest in Las Vegas. Zymire Hughes, 22, was taken into custody around 8 PM by members of the U.S. Marshals Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force. Authorities located Hughes hiding inside an apartment complex in the southeast section of Las Vegas following an out-of-state warrant for aggravated assault.

After returning to Sin City, Hughes relocated to a secondary residence in the southeast part of the city. Following a period of surveillance, U.S. Marshals moved in to execute the arrest. “Tonight the fear that one man brought to the Philadelphia community comes to an end,” U.S. Marshals Service Supervisory Deputy Robert Clark told reporters, according to NBC Philadelphia. “By hiding behind a Chucky-style Halloween mask, Hughes terrorized Philadelphia residents and believed he could evade law enforcement. He was wrong,” Clark added. Officials noted that Hughes attempted a brief escape during the operation before being secured without further incident. He is currently being held at the Clark County Detention Center awaiting extradition back to Pennsylvania.
Incident Outside Philadelphia City Hall
The charges stem from a chaotic 15-minute sequence on August 12, when a masked individual targeted at least six people near Philadelphia City Hall around 5:20 AM. According to police, Hughes first entered a local Dunkin' shop where an employee refused him service due to erratic behaviour. He then approached a 40-year-old female jogger while filming the encounter and keeping his hands hidden. “Are you ready to die?” Hughes allegedly asked the woman. The victim sustained injuries after tumbling to the ground while attempting to escape. Investigators subsequently identified Hughes as the suspect through surveillance footage and public tips. Legal Next Steps
Philadelphia officials strongly condemned the actions, emphasising that public harassment and intimidation will not be tolerated under the guise of online pranks or entertainment. “We take it very seriously any time someone thinks it is funny or entertaining to terrorise and harass individuals in any neighbourhood,” Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner said. “Regardless of his motive, his actions demonstrate that he is a punk and will not be tolerated. He will be caught and held accountable for his crimes," he added.
Hughes faces multiple felony and misdemeanour charges, including aggravated assault, terroristic threats, possession of an instrument of crime, simple assault, and reckless endangerment of another person.
