Donald Trump Accuses China of Massive Election Data Breach, Alleges 220 Million Voter Files Compromised
US President Donald Trump has accused China of carrying out what he called the largest compromise of American election data in history, alleging Beijing illicitly acquired 220 million US voter files over several years.
US President Donald Trump has accused China of carrying out what he called the largest compromise of American election data in history, alleging Beijing illicitly acquired 220 million US voter files over several years.
In a televised prime-time address from the White House, Trump said he would declassify intelligence on what he described as "shocking vulnerabilities" in the US election system, reviving years of claims that his 2020 election defeat was the result of widespread fraud.
Trump Alleges China Compromised Election Data Since 2020
"Over a period of years, starting during the 2020 election cycle, the People's Republic of China carried out what is believed to be the largest compromise of election data in history, resulting in China's illicit acquisition of 220 million US voter files," Trump said. He alleged the breach was designed to undermine the 2020 election, and claimed members of the "deep state" worked to cover it up.
"This data loss presents an unprecedented election security nightmare," he said.

'Catastrophically Short': Trump Slams US Election System
Trump said America's election system "falls catastrophically short" of an accurate and fair standard, and called for reforms to make cheating and interference "virtually impossible." Donald Trump Threatens To Target Iran’s Power Plants, Bridges Unless Tehran Returns to Talks (Watch Video).
"Every American deserves to know that when they cast their vote, that vote will be counted accurately in a system, and that is to make that system secure -- one where cheating and interference are not just difficult, but virtually impossible," he said.
"Unfortunately, the system we have today falls catastrophically short of that standard."
Not The First Time: Chinese Voter Data Claims Date Back To 2020
Allegations of Beijing collecting US voter data are not new. A 2020 report by the National Intelligence Officer for Cyber, partially declassified in 2022, said Chinese intelligence officials analyzed voter registration data from multiple American states to conduct "public opinion analysis."
However, more than 60 lawsuits filed by Trump and his allies after the 2020 election produced no ruling establishing fraud capable of changing the outcome, while recounts, audits, and Trump's own Justice Department found none.
What Comes Next
The White House is expected to release a wider tranche of declassified documents alongside the address. The claims are likely to reignite political debate ahead of the midterms, even as several intelligence assessments have previously found no evidence that any foreign actor altered ballots, vote tabulation, or reported results in 2020.
