US President Donald Trump ordered fresh US military strikes on multiple Iranian targets early Sunday, escalating tensions in the Middle East and putting the fragile ceasefire between Washington and Tehran under renewed strain. The operation came after the US accused Iran of violating the truce by attacking a commercial oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.

According to US Central Command (CENTCOM), American military aircraft struck Iranian surveillance infrastructure, communication systems, air defence sites, drone storage facilities and minelayer capabilities. The strikes were launched following an alleged Iranian drone attack on the oil tanker Kiku, which was carrying more than two million barrels of crude oil through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz.

He also issued a stern warning to Iran, saying the United States could soon abandon restraint if attacks continued.

CENTCOM said Iran had an opportunity to honour the ceasefire but instead chose to attack the tanker with a one-way drone. The latest military exchange follows a similar cycle of attacks earlier in the week, when an Iranian drone struck another merchant vessel near Oman, prompting US retaliatory strikes. The repeated confrontations have raised fears that the interim ceasefire reached between the two countries could collapse entirely.

Meanwhile, Iranian state media reported explosions near the Strait of Hormuz following the US strikes. The vital shipping lane remains at the centre of the confrontation, with both Washington and Tehran accusing each other of escalating hostilities, increasing concerns over regional stability and global energy supplies.
