A married high school teacher in Florida admitted to police that she had s*x with a 17-year-old student inside her classroom at Port Charlotte High School, with newly released bodycam footage showing her taking deputies to the spot where the alleged encounters happened.

Heather Mashburn-Smith, 37, was arrested on April 29, 2026 and charged with unlawful s*xual activity with certain minors. The charge was enhanced because of her position as a teacher. She has since been placed on administrative leave.

She walked deputies to the back of the classroom and pointed toward a pair of desks.

"I feel like it was these desks," she said before pointing toward another set.

"I'm pretty sure it was these ones," she added.

How Florida Teacher's Alleged Relationship With Student Began

According to court documents, the alleged relationship began after Mashburn-Smith and the 17-year-old student started communicating on Snapchat. The student reportedly told his teacher that she was "pretty", after which their conversations became flirtatious.

The student then began making additional trips to her classroom. Authorities said the relationship eventually became s*xual and that the pair had intercourse at least twice inside the school.

Mashburn-Smith reportedly told investigators that she sometimes left the side door slightly open so the student could enter after football practice. On other occasions, he would knock before she let him inside.

"It's not like I let him in and we went right to it or anything," she told officers. "We would hug and talk … like I said, it was not premeditated s*x."

Teacher Allegedly Told Student She Would Leave Husband For Him

Court documents also state that Mashburn-Smith discussed problems in her marriage with the student and allegedly told him that she wanted to leave her husband for him once he turned 18.

The student reportedly became concerned about the situation and stopped communicating with her. He also blocked her on Snapchat, although authorities said she continued trying to contact him.

Mashburn-Smith later admitted to investigators that she had made a mistake and acknowledged knowing that the student was a teenager.

Florida Teacher Arrested, Suspended From School

Mashburn-Smith was arrested on April 29 and taken into custody at the Charlotte County Jail. She was charged with unlawful s*xual activity with certain minors, with the charge enhanced to a first-degree felony because she was an educator. The charge can carry a maximum sentence of up to 30 years in prison.

Charlotte County Public Schools placed her on administrative leave following the arrest.

Charlotte County Sheriff Bill Prummell criticised the alleged conduct, saying teachers are expected to provide students with mentorship, guidance and encouragement.

The case remains a criminal allegation and Mashburn-Smith is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.
