During that final communication, he sent his real-time GPS coordinates while on the trail. When he failed to return to his outpost on schedule or respond to subsequent calls, his family alerted law enforcement. The missing persons report prompted a multi-agency search and rescue effort led by the Inyo County Search and Rescue team and the California Highway Patrol. Mubayi earned his Bachelor of Science in chemical engineering from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) in 2022, where he worked as an undergraduate research assistant and teaching assistant.
