Vaibhav Bhaskar Sets Florida Record With 11.99 GPA, Prompts School District To Overhaul Grading System

Indian-origin student Vaibhav Bhaskar has set a new Florida state record after graduating high school with an extraordinary 11.99 GPA, an achievement that has prompted local school officials to overhaul how academic performance is measured. Bhaskar, who is set to attend Duke University to study finance and economics, surpassed the previous Florida record of 11.84, according to the Palm Beach Post.

The Whiteboard That Set The Goal

Bhaskar said he stayed motivated through high school with a whiteboard in his room listing his long-term goals. He noted that back when he was a sophomore, he wrote down five goals for his high school career, with his top aims being to become valedictorian and break the state GPA record.

Once those goals were set, he said the focus shifted entirely to consistency. He explained that after defining his goals, he adopted the mindset that he would accomplish them no matter what, and from then on it became about patience. An Academic Schedule Built On 44 AP And Dual-Enrolment Courses

Bhaskar's remarkable GPA was driven by an exceptionally demanding academic schedule that included 44 Advanced Placement (AP) and dual-enrolment college courses. The cumulative weighting of those classes pushed his GPA to nearly 12 on the district's grading scale.

School District Calls It An 'Arms Race'

While Hillsborough County school officials praised Bhaskar's accomplishment, they said the system should not allow students to accumulate such an unusually high GPA. Principal Tiffany Ewell reportedly likened the loophole to an "arms race," prompting the district to revise its grading policy.

Many school districts do not impose a GPA cap, which encourages students to take increasingly heavy course loads to strengthen university applications. Bhaskar Backs The Shift To A Standardised Scale

Bhaskar said he supports the move to a standardised grading system with a five-point scale, calling it a far more standardised way to calculate GPAs. He added that his record 11.99 GPA on the district's scale would likely translate to around 4.93 on a standard 5.0 scale, noting that regardless of the scale used, colleges recalculate GPA on their own when reviewing applications.
