According to Biden, the memoir will cover a range of issues, including the economy, key policy decisions and his choice to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race. Biden said the memoir focuses on the challenges the United States faced during his presidency and the reasoning behind the decisions he made while in office. “Promise Me, America is about the challenges we faced as a nation. It’s about the decisions I made and why I made them,” Biden said in a video accompanying the announcement.

Why the Book's Release Is Drawing Attention

The memoir is scheduled to be published two weeks after the US midterm elections, when Democrats hope to regain control of Congress.

Its release timing could attract political attention, as some Democrats remain divided over Biden's decision to seek a second term before eventually withdrawing from the race following his widely criticised debate performance against Donald Trump in June 2024.

Biden entered office in January 2021 during the COVID-19 pandemic and shortly after the January 6 attack on the US Capitol.

The memoir is also expected to draw interest because of continuing public discussion surrounding Biden's health during his presidency.

Former First Lady Jill Biden wrote in her memoir View from the East Wing that she feared her husband was suffering a stroke after his debate performance, while the White House initially attributed his condition to a cold. Biden's health remained under scrutiny throughout his presidency, and in 2025 he announced that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

A Long Tradition of Presidential Memoirs

Modern US presidents have traditionally published books reflecting on their years in office, and Promise Me, America continues that practice. The title echoes Biden's 2017 memoir, Promise Me, Dad, which focused on the death of his son, Beau Biden.

Little, Brown and Company has not disclosed financial details of the publishing agreement, although presidential memoirs have historically attracted multi-million-dollar book deals.

Biden Says His Treatment Is Going Well

In the announcement video, Biden also spoke about his health and thanked supporters for their encouragement. “I've been spending a lot of time with my family. I'm dealing with a cancer diagnosis, been getting treatment, and it's going really well,” he said.

“I want to thank all those who have offered their prayers and support and well-wishes. It's meant the world to me and to Jill.” The publisher said Biden plans to promote the memoir through interviews and a book tour ahead of its release.
