IAC-1, INS Vikrant's Namesake Starts Sea Trials, All About The Indigenously-Built Aircraft Carrier

INS Vikrant, the indigenous aircraft carrier, set off on its maiden sea trials on August 4. This comes 50 years after its namesake's key role in the 1971 war. The Navy Spokesperson tweeted saying, "proud and historical moment for India”. This moment represents another step in the government's quest for an 'Atmanirbhar Bharat' & the 'Make in India' initiative. Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated the Indian Navy on this “historic milestone”. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh said, “A proud moment for India”. A statement released by the Navy said INS Vikrant is 262m long, a maximum of 62m wide and 59m high, including the superstructure. INS Vikrant has 14 decks, five in the superstructure. INS Vikrant, which has been designed for a crew of around 1,700, has over 2,300 compartments, including cabins to accommodate women officers. INS Vikrant will operate with approximately 24 Russian-built MiG-29K fighter jets. The same fighters are already deployed on the INS Vikramaditya. INS Vikramaditya is presently the Navy's only operational aircraft carrier. Watch the video to know more.
