Karwa Chauth, a one-day Hindu festival, is celebrated with much fervour in the North Indian states. It is observed by women during the Chaturthi Tithi, fourth day of Krishna Paksha. The fast is observed by married women who do not consume food or water post sunrise till the moon is sighted. Women pray for the long lives and good health of their husbands on this day. Karwa Chauth fast will be observed on Thursday, October 13 this year. Married women worship Lord Shiva, Devi Parvati, Lord Kartikeya & Lord Ganesha on this day. Women apply mehndi & dress up beautifully in their bridal jewellery & sometimes even their bridal lehenga. Women rise before sunrise to eat sargi (Food especially prepared for this occasion). After the moonrise, women hold a sieve and first look at their husbands through it and then the moon. Husbands then give their wives their first sip of water to break the fast.
