A stampede broke out at the Sangam area of the Maha Kumbh Mela early Wednesday, January 29, as millions of devotees jostled for space to take a holy dip on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya. Although reports said multiple deaths happened in the stampede, the Uttar Pradesh government remained tight-lipped on the number of casualties.
