Maharashtra Flood Fury: Mahad Wakes Up To Muck, Wreckage

Over 100 Thane Municipal Corporation staff were sent to Mahad-Poladpur in Raigad district to help with solid waste management, water & other issues post the July 22 devastating landslide and flooding caused by incessant rains, reported The Times Of India. Sandeep Malvi, additional commissioner at TMC told The Times Of India that the team comprising of conservancy staff, sanitary inspectors was sent to assist local administration in Mahad-Poladpur of Raigad district. They were sent along with 24 pumps, a 10,000 litre water tanker and two trucks with mineral water, rations, blankets, among others. A team of veterinarians has also gone to the area in 10 mini buses, dumpers and jeeps to carry out panchnama of animal carcasses and help in their disposal as per health norms, TMC commissioner Vipin Sharma told reporters. Intense rainfall coupled with excess rainwater from Mahabaleshwar draining into river Savitri & causing it to overflow triggered disaster at Mahad in Raigad. Two landslides in the district claimed more than 50 lives, rescue operations were hampered by the floodwaters and there was disruption in telecom services and power supply. Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray left Mumbai by helicopter to Raigad and then by road to survey the worst-hit Taliye village. 100 bodies have been retrieved and 22 people are missing following landslides triggered by heavy rainfall in the coastal regions of Maharashtra, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) said on July 25.
