A massive fire broke out at Mumbai's iconic Crawford Market around 6:15 pm on June 11. The fire destroyed several shops inside the heritage building. According to fire officials, the fire broke out in the north-end wing of the British-era building. The fire was doused around 9 pm, three hours after it began. Almost a dozen big & small stalls, with ground and mezzanine floors, have been reportedly destroyed in the fire. The shops inside the market were shut due to the COVID-19 crisis when the blaze erupted. Reportedly, Mumbai fire department received a call around 6:15 pm and fire fighters reached the spot within three minutes. A fire official said the situation had escalated to Level-2 from the initial Level-1 fire call. Six fire engine, five jumbo tankers, one quick response vehicle and an ambulance were rushed to the spot. No injuries have been reported so far and the cause of the fire is being ascertained. Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar also reached the location to take stock of the damage caused by the raging fire. Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Mandai, popularly known as Crawford Market, is located opposite the Mumbai Police headquarters. It is very close to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus station. It is a wholesale market for fruits, vegetables, chocolates, dry fruits, exotic pets and poultry.
