Supreme Court Brings Chief Justice Of India’s Office Under Right To Information Act

On November 13, the Supreme Court ruled that office of the Chief Justice of India is a public authority under the Right to information Act. A five judge bench headed by CJI Ranjan Gogoi upheld a Delhi High Court ruling of 2010. They dismissed three appeals filed by the Secretary General and Central Public Information officer of the Supreme Court. The outcome is that the office of the CJI will now entertain RTI applications. SC also held that RTI cannot be used as a tool of surveillance and that judicial independence has to be kept in mind while dealing with transparency.
