William Makepeace Thackeray was born on July 18, 1811 in Kolkata. He was an Indian-born English novelist, author and illustrator and is known for his satirical works. Thackeray was the only son of Richmond Thackeray, an administrator in the East India Company and after his father died in 1815, Thackeray was sent to England. He grew with an inclination towards writing and became a notable contributor of articles on varied topics. His earlier works were written under pen names, but later it went on to write novels.
